In the early hours of the 3rd of August, 2005, Lucy Hargreaves (22) was shot in her home by three masked men. Lucy had been sleeping on the living room sofa at her home in Lambourne Road, when three masked men burst into the address armed with a sawn-off shotgun. Lucy was shot twice in the stomach and once to the head from close range. The duvet cover Lucy was sleeping under was then covered in petrol and set alight. Petrol was also poured around the entrance and stairs of the property possibly to block any escape for those upstairs.
It's believed that Lucy's partner Gary Campbell had been the target of the attack. Gary was sleeping upstairs with his two year old daughter and they both managed to escape out of a window. Gary went back into the house and dragge Lucy out of the flames, but she had already died of her gun shot wounds.
The Investigation
In 2007 Anthony Downes and Kirk Bradley stood trial for Lucy’s murder. The pair, who are currently serving prison sentences for presiding over a ‘guns-for-hire’ gang, were acquitted after being told they had no case to answer following a four-week trial. It had been alleged that the pair were looking to exact revenge on Gary because he’d allegedly been a passenger in a stolen car that hit and killed a four-year-old boy in 1993. That boy was the brother of Anthony Downes.
As of 2021, Police continue to hunt Kevin Parle in connectio nwith Lucy's murder. Parle is suspected of involvement in Lucy's death, as well of that of 16-year-old Liam Kelly in Dingle.
